Ashraf Helmy, MD

Dr. Ashraf Helmy is a forensic psychiatrist based in Southern California with over 30 years of experience in the medical field. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has served as a California Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) since 2015.

After beginning his training in internal medicine, Dr. Helmy found himself drawn to the psychiatric dimensions of patient care and transitioned into psychiatry during his first year of residency at Behman Hospital, the oldest inpatient psychiatric institution in the Middle East. During his residency, he developed a strong interest in the intersection of psychiatry and law, which led him to pursue fellowship training in forensic psychiatry.

Dr. Helmy went on to teach the principles of forensic psychiatry to residents and medical students at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago for seven years, where he also conducted fitness-for-duty evaluations for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. He also completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry, focusing on functional assessments and treatment for older adults with psychotic and cognitive disorders.

After relocating to California, Dr. Helmy worked within the state hospital system, providing evaluation, treatment, and court reporting for patients found not guilty by reason of insanity and those classified as offenders with mental disorders.

Outside of his professional work, Dr. Helmy has a lifelong interest in racquet and ball sports,  from tennis and squash to his current pursuit, table tennis,  along with an interest in world cultures and religions. He lives in Southern California with his family and volunteers in youth sports.
