Dr. John D. Hixson is a board-certified, fellowship trained neurologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of epilepsy and seizures. His research interests include emotion processing in temporal lobe epilepsy, antiepileptic drug management, and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). Dr. Hixson also spends part of his time working on public advocacy and health service issues as relates to epilepsy care.

Dr. Hixson is an assistant professor of clinical neurology at UCSF. He earned a medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following residency, he conducted research and completed a fellowship in epilepsy and neurophysiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Hixson serves on the policy advisory board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California and on the advocacy advisory board of the American Academy of Neurology. He also serves as the medical editor-in-chief for the AAN News publication.
